London Bridge is falling down
It may surprise
many people that there is actually some truth to this
nursery rhyme. London Bridge has actually fallen down quite a few times
over the years. Originally there was a wooden bridge which the Romans
created which fell down once they had left the city. It was then rebuilt
several times but each time resulting in it being destroyed once again.
In each of these occasions the bridge was built from timber. It was only
after a major fire in the 1100's that it was decided to make the bridge
out of stone.
A brand-new London Bridge was built and opened in 1831. The old bridge
was taken down and shipped over to America where it became a very popular
tourist attraction near to the Grand Canyon. The bridge that stands there
today was officially opened in 1973. But even this bridge has had its
problems, as it was hit by a large ship in the early 1980s.
So like many of the popular tourist attractions in London, London Bridge
has certainly had its history to get it to the stage it is in today. It
is currently used every day by hundreds of people to get across the River
Thames from one side to the other. It now has five lanes of traffic which
use the bridge everyday and cost £4 million to build. London Bridge gives
a great view of the River Thames and all the movements that go on there.
Even the river itself is very busy with dozens of private boats and boat
charters going up and down the river each day. The river has always been
huge part of the city of London and this is true even more so today.
Having a boat trip can be very easy way to explore the city and to see the
sights without getting too involved with all the traffic and the hustle
and bustle of the city.
